The STROVOLT WT20 tungsten electrode is a 2% thoriated electrode for DC TIG (GTAW) welding. It starts the arc easily, holds a stable arc on DC electrode negative, and carries more current than pure tungsten of the same diameter. The ground point keeps its shape, which gives a focused arc and a narrow, controlled weld bead.

Each electrode is 2.4 mm in diameter and 175 mm long (3/32" x 7") with a ground finish. The grade is classified WT20 to ISO 6848 and EWTh-2 to AWS A5.12, with 1.8 - 2.2 % thorium oxide, and is identified by the red tip.

Use it for carbon and low-alloy steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium and copper alloys. As a guide, the 2.4 mm size is used at about 150 to 250 A on DC electrode negative.

The electrodes are supplied in a hang-tab case of 10 pieces with a clear lid, which keeps them clean and straight and leaves the colour code visible.

Safety: WT20 contains thorium oxide. Use dust extraction when grinding the tip and do not inhale the dust.

Key Features

Engineered features of this Strovolt product

Easy Arc Starting
2% thoriated tungsten ignites readily and re-strikes reliably, also at low current.
Stable DC Arc
Holds a steady, focused arc on DC electrode negative for controlled penetration and a narrow weld bead.
High Current Capacity
Carries more current than pure tungsten of the same diameter, with a tip that keeps its ground point longer.
Ground Finish
Ground surface gives good contact in the collet and consistent current transfer.
Colour Coded to ISO 6848
Red tip identifies the WT20 grade at a glance, so electrodes are not mixed up in the workshop.
Protective Case of 10
Hang-tab case with clear lid keeps the electrodes clean and straight, and the grade stays visible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this product

What is a WT20 tungsten electrode used for?
WT20 (AWS EWTh-2) is a 2% thoriated tungsten electrode for DC TIG welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium and copper alloys. It is not the usual choice for AC welding of aluminium.
What does the red tip mean?
Red is the ISO 6848 colour code for WT20, tungsten with about 2% thorium oxide.
What current can a 2.4 mm WT20 electrode carry?
As a guide, a 2.4 mm (3/32") thoriated electrode is used at about 150 to 250 A on DC electrode negative. The right value depends on the torch, the shielding gas and the joint.
Is thoriated tungsten safe to use?
WT20 contains thorium oxide, which is slightly radioactive. The main risk is dust from grinding the tip. Use dust extraction when grinding, do not inhale the dust, and dispose of grinding dust according to local rules.
How many electrodes are in one pack?
Each case holds 10 electrodes, 2.4 mm diameter and 175 mm long.
